Explore this 5 part video series I made to help you and your team manage the potential emotions of lockdown. Leading in Lockdown explores how the grief cycle is relevant during times of major change, the importance of gratitude, recognising suppressed emotions, making COVID-19 mean something and pragmatic optimism. The ideas and strategies are just as important for leading self as they are for leading others. Enjoy.
VIDEO 1: GOOD GRIEF
In this first video, I talk about two types of grief, the stages of grief, and what we all crave for in these “unprecedented” times. I’d love you to watch these with your family, or whoever you’re living with at the moment and just talk. Share it with your team (virtually) and just talk. And be with each other. Pain shared, is pain divided. Because just accepting where you’re at, and where others are at, creates even more of a sense of connection and community. And that’s what we all need to pull us through.
VIDEO 2: HUGS OF HOPE
We are social beings. We crave connection and touch. I bet right now, you’re reaching out to people to check-in with how they’re doing. Maybe you’re doing even more than you’ve done in a long while. And I also bet you’re feeling so grateful for the beautiful people you DO have in your life. In this video, I outline a way of keeping that connection alive through these uncertain times.
VIDEO 3: NOTHING MORE THAN FEELINGS
For most of us, the pandemic is a massive inconvenience. Yet for some, maybe even you, it can be extremely traumatic. Not necessarily the virus itself, but the emotions the virus surfaces within you, from past unresolved experiences. In this video, I talk about several “repressed” emotions that you or someone you know may be experiencing. I also encourage you to be even more gentle and compassionate with yourself and others.
VIDEO 4: THE MEANING OF LIFE
We all crave meaning in our lives. Some researchers tell us that it’s even more important than personal happiness. In this video, I share some ideas to get your thinking about how COVID-19 could have meaning for you. How you could look back on this period in your life and link it to something meaningful. My wish for you is that the 3 ideas I mention will be a springboard for you to seek out that meaning.
VIDEO 5: THE STOCKDALE PARADOX
You may be focusing on the negative consequences of COVID-19. You may not. You may have come to grips with the pandemic and are constantly looking for the gold, the possibilities. In this video, I’m going to encourage you to do both. Not just during the pandemic, but as a maxim of great leadership. It’s based around a survivor of a POW camp during the Vietnam War, James Stockdale, a naval officer who went on to be a Vice Presidential Candidate in the USA.
