This episode’s question is actually a few questions rolled into one:
“How best for young leaders to work in a politically charged organisation where the values espoused do not align with the values in use? How can they influence the organisation to change without putting themselves and their career at high risk? How can they decide when it is time to leave and when it is OK to stay? How can they manage the conflicts between their own beliefs and values and the values they are asked to use while at work?
I have always used the “ethical angel” on my shoulder as a way to direct my actions, but this is hard to do until one has reached some level of financial security in life.. I do not know what younger leaders are best to do in these days of less ethical and less competent senior leaders.”
I approach the question by talking about how managing key stakeholders is vital for your leadership success.
One of these stakeholders is your boss. I’m not saying put all your time into upwards management, but continually developing your relationship with them is vital.
What’s also essential is to be true to you, to be in integrity and alignment with your values. This involves gaining clarity around your values and learning certain skills or as Professors Goffee and Jones from London Business School say “Be more of yourself with skill”.
So, what can you do to better support your manager?
